About Us
Who We Are
We are the first Activists-led national organization with a feminist approach at a time most needed, bringing a fierce, longstanding commitment to social justice in various aspects for our community’s most voiceless and vulnerable.
Africa has made important progress in human rights since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter. Yet stigma, discrimination and violence against key populations including people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) continue across the continent.
Ghana inherited colonial-era laws policing same-sex relations, reinforced over time by conservative religious influences. Although gender diverse people have always existed within Ghanaian communities, stigma persisted. In recent years—especially after the 2019 World Congress of Families event in Accra—coordinated national campaigns have pushed for laws that further restrict the rights of gender and sexual minorities.
These pressures have led to increased harassment, blackmail, arbitrary arrests, evictions, violence, and deepening discrimination against people perceived to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
It was in response to these growing threats that community members, activists, and allies came together to find solutions related to legal protection, in order to protect fundamental human rights. Our collective action led to the creation of our organization, a community-driven effort to advance safety, dignity, and equality for all.
